Here in the western world the concept of Chi (pronounced Chee) is not given much thought. Yet in many parts of the world it is considered the active and fundamental principle of live. Some call it “prana” some refer to it as “the energy of Gaia.” What ever name it goes by it is universally accepted as the “natural energy of the Universe.”
This energy cannot be measured by modern medical instruments or seen by the human eye (thus why it is not highly regarded in Western circles). Yet like quarks, leptons and neutrinos, Chi permeates all living matter and exists within us.
From the moment we appear in this world everything we think and do affects our Chi. It is our energy and as such is vital to our well being. As a personal trainer I have seen many a wise and compassionate client devastate their Chi with poor lifestyle choices. From the food eaten to the thoughts held in the mind each choice we make in this life affects our Chi.
There is no life without Chi. Eat poorly and we deplete our Chi. Engage in too many mindless activities and our Chi becomes dull. We must become considerate of this force in our life, cultivate it and do our best to preserve it.
I know within The Daily Buddha posts I often talk of the mind and our thoughts, but what we do with our bodies is of equal importance and a part of the greater picture of balance. These bodies carry us through this life. It isĀ our physical body that allows us to do for others and be there for family and friends. It is Chi that fuels the efforts of both mind and body.
The best way to tend and care for our Chi is by thinking, living, working and existing in harmony with both our internal and external worlds. Chi feeds and integrates beautifully with self-dicipline, and intelligent action guided by reason.
Courage is the essence of Chi, the state or quality of mind that enables us to face danger, overcome fears and not fold under pressure. Without courage we cannot apply wisdom, stand for anything, or reveal temperance.
So think out the force that drives you, that heals you, that we all share and tend to it every chance you get. Feed it properly, exercise with it and find a new strength and source of energy that will not only carry you through life but those that depend on you.
We cannot continue to fill the cups of others if our own cup is empty.
Have a beautiful holiday weekend!
Peace and Love, Jim
