the ride

So often we get frustrated at the lack of control we seem to have over life, yet it is not the lack of control we have so much as it is the lack of understanding what we can control.

It helps to view life as the metaphorical carnival ride – once we step on the ride (come to an age of understanding) there really is no stepping off. We cannot control where the ride takes us or the thrills and chills it will dish up.

What we can control is how we feel about our ride, the ups, the downs, the twists and turns. We can admire the beauty of the lights and noise whizzing by us or we can be terrified by it all – these perceptions ARE in our control. In fact if we really look at it, this is all that is in our control!

Yes we can make decisions that point us in a particular direction, but this is like turning our head a different direction while we are STILL on the ride. The view changes, but the ride goes on!

I am reminded of a wonderful saying by one of my childhood heroes:

Everything is determined by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust – we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper.” — Albert Einstein

So ease up and let go of those things which you have no control over, surrender to life and let it wash over you like a refreshing waterfall. It’s yours for the letting go and what better time to start than this weekend!

Peace and Love, Jim
