Off Days. . .

Reflection

Lets face it – We all have those days where we just can’t seem to flow with life, feel amazing or even together. Most of us call them “off days” but just what is off?

I personally do not like the term “off day” because it sounds like there is some standard concept of a day and what it should feel like or be like, and that right there can be a (if not THE) problem. You see, when we put standards or measures on something like a day in our life and how it SHOULD be in order for us to call it good, productive or whatever the adjective we so favorably desire, we are in fact sitting our selves up for “off days”!

Somedays we WILL hit all the magic measurements of such a definition, while many days we will MISS the boat altogether. Once that starts we tend to spiral down more and more as our days fail to meet our expectations.

So the better option over trying to always have “ON” days is to simply awaken and embrace what the day brings. Do your best by being attentive, present and mindful then apply yourself and your wisdom as best you can to each moment in your day. This may not make every day more amazing but it gives us a point of grounding, a place from which we can reflect and know that no matter what happened we gave the day our best. Once you start to get there you will quickly realize that is ALL you can ever REALLY do!

So is there really no such thing as off days or on days, these are just concepts that often lead us to lofty and unrealistic expectations. Instead simply be thankful that you awoke today and receive another chance to learn and grow instead of accomplish and check off.

Remember that in life we can learn, grow and change or measure, muddle and miss the point. The outcomes equal vastly different perspectives!

Evolve or Petrify. . .

Standing Still

Okay, the title to todays post may sounds a bit harsh—but it is something we all need to keep at the top of our list each passing day.

Change is inevitable in this world but most of us, tend to try and avoid it like a bad dish at a potluck dinner.  But if we look closely we can see the most vibrant and alive things in the universe are constantly evolving, growing, changing and adapting—and if we aren’t doing that, we petrify. Although fossils are nice they are remnants of a past and often no longer relevant.

So unless the people we know, the activities we participate in, the words we write, the thoughts we think, the experiences we create are different in some ways from one year ago—we are on our way to becoming prematurely petrified – now please take those words with a grain of salt, because finding joy in where we are right now is important, but “right now’ is also always changing! Learning to welcome change and being open to possibility is both liberating and exhilarating and a very SMART way to live.

Life has no concept of standing still, only people do.
