Art of Life. . .

This weekend was spent exploring the creative thinking end of my work on an upcoming collateral project. Over the years my creative process, which once seemed so random, so haphazard has become much more familiar and intimate to me. The steps and direction I once could not see are now perfectly clear and the reasons and rhyme behind what I am trying to do make much more sense.

When looked at as an art-form, the same can be said of life.

What if we live our life as though it were a work of art? What if everyday is another brushstroke or pixel on a canvas we call life? Would we plan our work of art or let it flow freely and without hindrance? What type of artists do we choose to become? And what would we contribute to the world through our art?

Here are some creative principles that have that I have embraced over the years. They have rewarded me dearly not only in my work, but my life as well.

  1. The best way to have great ideas is to have lots of ideas and throw the bad ones away.
  2. Always look for a second right answer.
  3. If at first you don’t succeed, take a break.
  4. Know when this is as good as it’s going to get.
  5. Focus on your thoughts, they are brief, you will forget them.
  6. If everyone says you are wrong, you’re one step ahead. If everyone laughs at you, you’re two steps ahead.
  7. The answer to your problem “pre-exists.” You need to ask the right question to reveal the answer.
  8. When you ask a dumb question, you get a smart answer.
  9. Never solve a problem from its original perspective.
  10. Visualize your problem as solved before solving it.

Art is never stagnant, neither is life. The beautiful authentic life you are creating is art. It is the highest art.

Peace and Love, Jim
