Contrasts. . .

Life is the coexistence of all opposite values. Joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain, up and down, hot and cold, here and there, light and darkness, birth and death. All experience is by contrast, and one would be meaningless without the other.

Happiness is not a permanently sustainable condition 100% of the time. By fundamental necessity, there must be some time in everyone’s life where happiness is absent for them to be able to appreciate a happy state of being. But if you can find Joy in recognizing and observing contrasts (the root of the conceptualization of happiness) then you can always appreciate life no matter your circumstance.

If it was light but now it is dark, you can be happy in the knowledge that a change has occurred and that when the light once again shows itself, you can have a renewed appreciation for it.

I think it follows that: the way to experience a deeper, more self-sustaining happiness is to grow a deep appreciation for contrasts and change. After all, change is the only true constant in this Universe.

Peace and Love, Jim
